Cloud Backup

Q: What does it cost?

A: Our solution is based on the size of the backups, not on the number of devices/servers being backed up. In addition, the stored size is after compression and de-duplication.  Your mileage will vary depending on the type of data being protected. We also lower costs for older archive data.  In short, it’s difficult to say what the costs are for a given environment since the data set can be very different from organization to organization. We provide a free LAN Storage Discovery service to help us understand your data better and allows us to approximate cost to protect the data.

Q: Do I have enough bandwidth to support cloud backup?

A: Due to incremental-forever backup technology we only have to perform a full backup once. The full backup is often performed with a portal, external drive that is shipped to the data center to avoid the full backup transfer over the internet. After this first full backup is imported we then perform a block-level incremental backup and no additional full backups are required – ever. In most cases the existing bandwidth will be sufficient for cloud backup. In general, we recommend a T1 (1.5Mbps) per 1TB of data protected.

Q: Do I have too much data for cloud backup?

A: We can easily support 10’s of terabytes of data backup for a given client and can scale our solution to the largest enterprise environment. We avoid the initial large transfer of data by “seeding” the data on portable disk drives that are shipped to our data center.  In addition, we can provide “tiering” of the data to archive older data.  Using a cluster of backup devices we can ensure we can meet virtually any backup requirement.

Q: Is cloud backup secure?

A: Ours is. Most cloud backup offerings will offer some level of encryption. However, the key question is “Where is the encryption key stored?”. If the encryption key is stored with the cloud provider they would have access to the encrypted data. Our solution is industrial-strength AES 256-bit encryption, and we do NOT store the encryption key unless you request us to.

Q: How do I get my data back quickly?  I can’t wait for it to download over the internet!

A: In addition to an offsite copy you also have the option to store the backup data locally at no additional cost. This provides for quick restores without using the internet for transfers.  In case of a major disaster in which you lose your local copy of data we can quickly copy your data to portable disk drive(s) and ship it to you – usually within 24-48 hours.

Q: Do you offer recovery services?

A: Yes, we offer professional data recovery services onsite as well as remote support. Optionally we also can provide a disaster recovery environment using our “Restore-to-Cloud” service.

Q: Do you offer a fully managed service?

A: Yes, our service is fully managed and we handle virtually every aspect of backup and recovery.  We are more than just a backup service. We provide for an end-to-end solution including monitoring, management and support of the environment.
